LASER ABLATION IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY

Equipment and tooling in the aviation industry require precision cleaning and care to ensure the substrate isn’t damaged or altered in any way. From coating removal to tool/mold cleaning and bonding preparation, our laser cleaning systems provide a deep clean without impacting the integrity of your product.

Automatic laser cleans a large invar tool moldOur laser cleaning systems are available in both handheld and automated options. This is convenient for mold cleaning applications, like composite mold cleaning, as handheld lasers are extremely consistent and precise and allow for a wide range and variety of molds to be cleaned.

LASER ABLATION FOR COMPOSITE MOLD CLEANING

With composite mold cleaning, composites are made in molds also called “tools.” These tools can be made from certain metals and other materials and need to be able to withstand thousands of production cycles. Because these tools can be made from expensive metals—like INVAR—it’s important that aviation companies find a way to recover these molds in the most time and cost efficient manner.

Current methods of cleaning composite molds include using hand-sanding methods with abrasives like scotch-brite pads. Not only is this method slow, it requires extensive physical effort from the workers, putting them at risk for injuries like repetitive strain injury (RSI).

Benefits of Laser Ablation for Composite Mold Cleaning Include:

  • Doesn’t damage or alter the substrate
  • Increases product and aircraft fatigue lifecycle
  • Uses zero dangerous abrasives like media blasting
  • Produces no waste and is environmentally friendly
  • Quiet process that only requires laser safety glasses for PPE
  • Can be a handheld or automated process depending on the facility’s needs
  • Cleans at the point of use—eliminating the need to move or dismantle the tools
  • Much faster when compared to traditional, hand abrasive methods like scotch-brite pads
